So I had been following Asos on instagram, which I am fairly new to because I just received an iPhone this month. I bought my senior prom dress from there so besides me liking their clothes, I had a ~bond~ with them.
Of course, they fucked that up by posting a picture of a white girl in a Native American headdress. Maybe 2 or 3 other girls pointed out that this is cultural appropriation without really being rude about it and I also posted that it was wrong and why.
This white boy of course insults us, calls us “hipsters” who “jumped on the cultural appropriation bandwagon”. His argument was that we only focused on headdresses and he didn’t see us calling out other forms of appropriation (which, he doesn’t follow me on Tumblr so). We argue back. Then he tells us (and note that 3 of us are Asian girls) that we don’t even know what horrible things happen outside our country and proceeds to use his white friend in Alaska who experiences food shortages sometimes as an example. Then as you can see, the white boy says we bullied the company.
Most of the hundreds of comments on that picture were “omg so cute” or “you guys need to calm down it’s just fashion they’re appreciating that culture duh!!!” Obviously if anyone read what I or the other girls posted, they did not comprehend it. Or maybe that just straight up don’t care. Usually when companies are called out by random little people like me, they ignore it. It just really bothered me that whoever runs the Asos instagram knew what we were arguing about and probably read out posts about how headdresses are sacred to Native Americans and they still had the audacity to just say, “We love a good headdress over here.” EXCEPT THATS NOT A GOOD HEADDRESS AND IF YOU APPRECIATE NATIVE AMERICAN CULTURE YOU DONT MAKE THEIR SACRED OBJECTS INTO COSTUMES
NOT TO MENTION YOU ARE A BRITISH COMPANY LOL NOT LIKE EUROPEAN SETTLERS ESPECIALLY BRITISH COLONISTS WHO CAME TO MURRICA DIDNT FUCK THEM OVER OR ANYTHING
“Fashion” is not an excuse.
